In the summer of 2023, I captured Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Hawaii with a broken analog camera using a single roll of 35mm film. Tracing the leaked light trails on the entire film roll, I overlapped landscapes taken from various locations creating a single composite landscape.

2023년 여름, 고장 난 카메라로 요세미티, 타호 호수, 그리고 하 와이를 35mm 필름 한 롤에 담았다. 필름 롤 전체에 빛이 샌 궤적 을 따라 다수의 장소에서 찍은 풍경을 겹쳐 한 장의 풍경으로 만들 었다.

Gazing upon distant landscapes through a telescope,
Aged memories, recalling each time anew,
Picturing the hometown through the lens of Google Maps,
Those in distance, beyond the reach,
Observing an eagle zoomed in manyfold,
Texture of skin through a video call screen,
Reading the death tolls in articles,
Missing, or mourning.

Certain things become distinctly clear in distance. The “seeing machines” such as satellites, FaceTime, and cameras compress and simultaneously reinforce the sense of distance, since they render “seeing” possible, yet visualize “unreachable.” Distance is inevitable. I am as distant from you as the half of the planet, yet as close as the distance between my hand and my eyes. Make an image by overlapping measurable units of distance: If the figure blurs with each layer, does the longing diminish? Translate the distance into sound: Might the yearning deafen my ears?

망원경으로 바라보는 먼 곳의 풍경,
반복해서 떠올리는 낡은 기억,
구글맵으로 짐작하는 예전 동네,
멀리 떨어져 만날 수 없는 사람들,
수십 배 확대해 바라보는 머리 위의 매,
영상 통화 화면 너머 손등의 피붓결,
기사로 읽는 죽음들,
그리움, 또는 애도.

먼 곳에 있기에 선명해지는 것들이 있다. 인공위성, 페이스타임, 카메라 등 ‘보는 기계들’은 거리감을 압축하고 동시에 강화한다. 그것들은 ‘볼 수 있음’을 가능케 하지만 ‘닿을 수 없음’을 시각화하기 때문이다. 거리감은 불가피하다. 나는 너와 멀리 있기에 행성의 반만큼 멀지만, 멀리 있기에 내 손과 내 눈의 거리만큼 가깝다. 거리감을 측정할 수 있는 단위로 중첩해서 한 장의 이미지로 만들어 본다. 중첩한 만큼 대상이 흐릿해지면, 그만큼 그리움이 줄어들까. 거리감을 소리로 번역할 수 있다면, 사무치는 그리움에 귀가 멀 수도 있을까.
